Ellis: AFL needs to run deep in 2020
Ellis: AFL needs to run deep in 2020

Blayne Treadgold
26 March 2019

Former Hawthorn Premiership player and West Coast Eagles midfielder, Xavier Ellis believes the AFL will need to play as much football as possible to make up financial losses following the COVID-19 crisis.

Speaking on The Warm Up, Ellis said the proposed date of 31 May was ‘wishful thinking’ for the recommencement of the 2020 season which Ellis believes could run until the end of spring or into summer.

“I do believe that we will get football, maybe they could go all the way to the back of November or December.”

“I think they (AFL) are so far in the drain financially, they’ll be trying to make as much money in terms of filling Optus Stadium as much as they possibly can,” Ellis said.

Despite the potential for the AFL to run deep into the cricket season, including a potential clash with the T20 World Cup scheduled to start on 18 October, Ellis is confident a solution will be found without the use of suburban grounds such as Lathlain Oval or Cockburn.

“They’ve (AFL) got power, They’ve got room to move…. If they do go deep they’ll have to work around potentially the cricket warming up.”

“If there is an issue running into the cricket, I’m sure they can find ways around it” Ellis said.
