Anzac Appreciation Bringing the World Together During COVID-19
Anzac Appreciation Bringing the World Together During COVID-19

Kiara Thompson – 24th April 2020

With the cancellation of all ANZAC services being put in place earlier this month. As a nation, we have been asked to remember our soldiers differently this year by standing in our driveways at dawn with a candle as a way to commemorate those that have fought for us.

Although things are a little different this year, other countries have also decided to join our yearly tradition and find ways to show that they are also honouring the ANZAC’s. The most noticeable of these would be Switzerland who projected the Australian flag on the Swiss Alps as a sign of Solidarity and hope during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Projection of the flag happened early Thursday morning onto Mount Matterhorn, overlooking Zermatt.

Spa director, Daniel Luggen, said the projections were a message to the rest of the world.

“Since almost a month, we’re illuminating every night the Matterhorn with different symbols, to give the people hope and show our solidarity to the world,” Mr Luggen stated in a video posted to Facebook on Wednesday evening, Australian time.

Even though we may not be able to celebrate ANZAC Day the way we normally would with Dawn services, parades and family gatherings, we can still remember all that they have done from the safety of our homes with flags candles and homemade wreaths.

There will also be a National commemoration service being held at 5:30 am AEST on ABC that will be available on Tv, Radio, Youtube and Facebook. With Perth’s RSL Commemorative Service broadcasting live from 6:30 am local time on ABC radio, and live on ABC Perth’s Facebook page as well.
